Dr. Johna Hansen, PhD, LCSW

I enjoy walking alongside people as we work together to figure out ways to help them feel better.  As someone who has gone through experiential trainings (getting to experience the types of therapy I offer), I wanted to help others benefit from these evidence-based therapeutic approaches.

Therapy does not have to last forever.  Some people believe that short-term therapy can be more beneficial for clients.  Focusing on goals and recognizing when they’ve been achieved can provide you with a sense of healing.  Additionally, therapy does not necessarily have to include talking about your past.

I provide a structured and goal-oriented approach to therapy. Every week we decide what would be the most helpful homework for you to complete in between your sessions.  When we meet, I will ask how your homework went the previous week and what you want to focus on in therapy that day.

I consider myself to be a warm, empathic therapist who is looking to help you stay focused on your goals.  I can be direct with feedback and will interrupt you during the session to make sure you are staying on target.  Our time is short together and I want to make sure you get the most out of each session.

Before working as a private practitioner, I worked in various social work agencies providing therapy to children and directing an intimate partner violence program in a non-profit law firm.  I decided to get a PhD in social work because I was interested in understanding certain aspects of being a clinician from a research perspective. While working on my PhD, I decided to start a private practice because I wanted to to work with people using the best practices while also giving time to conducting research that will enhance the way I practice and help others as they practice.
